Caring for our
Environment |
|
It is important that our
plants are grown in an
environmental and ethical way. We grow plants to
enable our customers to enhance their
surroundings and minimize the effects to our
environment in the process. We
take responsibility for all of
our actions, and endeavor
to grow your plant in an environmentally friendly manner. |
|
|

|
Plants and gardening are beneficial in many
ways. Trees and plants are essential to life on
earth, and they sponge up carbon dioxide and air
pollutants. Plants can help encourage wildlife to
your surroundings and help in the fight against flash
flooding (water will not run off a garden as quickly
as it will off a tarmac drive!).
|
|
Gardening has also been proven to have
health benefits, by improving mood and
relaxation.
The aesthetic benefits of plants speak
for themselves, but they can also help to increase
privacy
in your garden and reduce noise pollution.
The benefits of plants are endless......

Plastic from polytunnels ready to be re-used
or recycled
|
Recycling is part of
everyday life at The Bransford
Webbs Plant Company. Green waste is composted
and waste polythene is recycled.
Materials are
re-used where possible to prevent adding to land fill.
We try and recycle or reuse as many used pots as possible.
|
|
Printer cartridges are recycled when possible and
all scrap paper is reused or recycled. We try to
minimize the amount of paper we use by e-mailing
our customers if we can. All our vehicles
are
regularly serviced to help reduce emissions.

Our plants are grown on two sites in Worcestershire,
one just outside Worcester and one near Droitwich.
They are grown outside, under polythene or under
glass. We can boast that the majority of our plants are
British Grown
and therefore, this reduces our
carbon footprint.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) combines the
use of cultural, biological and chemical methods to
control pests and diseases.
Biological methods involve
the distribution of beneficial insects which eat the pests,
e.g Phytoseilus persimils is a predator of
Red
Spider Mite.
|

Phytoseulius persimilis used to control
Red Spider Mite. The
predators are scattered through the crop, and the bottle
left for any remaining insects to find their own way out.
|
|

All beds are regularly cleaned when plants are
moved
|
Cultural control methods
include keeping work
areas clean, reducing debris and weeds, and
keeping
tools clean. Pesticides are only used as
a last resort control. There are times when this cannot
be avoided in the production of an
aesthetically
pleasing ornamental plant.
|
|
The Bransford Webbs Plant Company has signed up
to the Voluntary
Initiative (VI) and actively strive to
reduce the number of pesticides
used. The VI
aims to minimize the impact of pesticides through
training,
awareness and changing practice.

We are also committed to the Environmental
Management Systems (EMS) which helps to
reduce and manage the key environmental
impacts of the business through training
and guidance. We have achieved BS8555, a
British standard, which splits environmental
management systems into phases. This
involved auditing by an external body registered with UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service).
