New logo to help educate consumers about recyclable plant pots

Following the introduction of the new taupe plastic pot, which is kerbside recyclable, it is paramount that we educate the final consumer as quickly as possible that these pots can be put in their kerbside recycling bin and encourage consumers and garden centres to engage with their local councils and recycling plants to ensure the pot is included on the ‘can be’ recycled list. Most packaging in the supermarkets now displays widely recognisable symbols to show whether it can or cannot be recycled, but also in many cases a much more obvious tag line to flag up the fact the material can be recycled, e.g. on the front of the main label or on a bottle top. Major expansion work at Bransford Webbs

Following months of detailed planning, work is now underway on a major expansion at The Bransford Webbs Plant Company.   Building has begun on a new production area, which covers 18, 000m2 and will consist of 49 low polytunnels. This new development will increase our production capacity by 20%, enabling us to further meet our customers’ requirements. The new tunnels will allow production staff the increased ability to control individual growing environments of specific crops leading to further increases in the high-quality standards of our plants. The aim is to begin potting into the area once partially completed in March 2020, with a final completion date planned for autumn 2020.     “This is the largest single expansion we have undertaken here at Bransford Webbs”, commented Adrian Marskell, Managing Director. “It will enable us to cope with the increasing demands from our customers for quality UK grown stock”.

IPPS 6 packer award for Bransford Webbs apprentice

Isobel Watson, from The Bransford Webbs Plant Company, has won a place on the IPPS European Regional Annual conference, taking place this year in Stratford upon Avon, in the Midlands. Isobel, an apprentice at Bransford Webbs, who works within the liner unit on the nursery, impressed the judging panel with both her personal and employer statement, earning her a well-deserved place at the conference.   The three day-long conference, titled ‘Technical Times’, is being organised this year by Bransford Webbs’ Propagation and Technical Manager, and IPPS Vice Chairman, Karl O’Neill. Running from Wednesday 9th to Friday 11th October 2019 and hosted at the Double Tree Hilton Hotel in Stratford upon Avon, the conference will cover a range of topics from the breeding of new plant varieties to technical developments, from real time remote crop monitoring to plant health. Online offerings from Bransford Webbs (Trade only)

The Bransford Webbs Plant Company are proud to announce the launch of their online webshop (trade only), allowing wholesale customers the ease and freedom of placing their orders online at their own convenience.   Following months of consultation with both the developers and customers, the webshop has been written to ensure the customer has all the relevant information they need at hand in order to place their order. Logging onto the webshop, though the home page of the current website, customers can view their reserve, place orders, check through past orders and past invoices. Local school children tackle plastics issue in horticulture

In recent weeks, the year 6 class at the Wyche Primary School, Malvern have been undertaking a project on plastics. The culmination of this project resulted in the children visiting two local supermarkets to try and educate the customers on the use of plastic in their weekly shopping. During the topic, the children also complied and sent out a questionnaire to parents at the school to aid the market research of The Bransford Webbs Plant Company with the introduction of the new taupe plastic pot. The Bransford Webbs Plant Company were keen to discover if their current thoughts on the use of black plastic and the future of the taupe pots were correct. All the people surveyed had a garden at home but only 47% of them considered themselves to be keen gardeners. Successful National Plant Show for Bransford Webbs

The Bransford Webbs Plant Company were proud winners in several of the new plant categories, with Clematis ‘ElodiTM’, jointly entered with Guernsey Clematis.   Clematis ‘ElodiTM’, new for 2020 in the compact, mound forming clematis range, won best in category for shrubs and climbers voted for by the judges, and best in category for shrubs and climbers voted for by the visitors. To top this, and to the delight of all concerned, it won best in show as voted for by the visitors.   The show itself, was busy for Bransford Webbs with plenty of interest from current and potential visitors with both the new for 2020 range featured on the stand and current stock available. Apprentice of the year winner from Bransford Webbs!

Apprentice of the Year was awarded at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival last Friday, and was won by Bransford Webbs Thomas Everard. Thomas, who is in the second year of his apprenticeship scheme, was presented with the award by Monty Don, during the show. “We are very proud of Tom’s achievements”, commented Karl O’Neill, Apprenticeship mentor at Bransford Webbs. “He has worked very hard during his apprenticeship and is a worthy winner of this award. We are positive he has a bright future with us here”. Thomas joined Bransford Webbs in September 2017, on the two-year apprenticeship scheme, working towards a level 2 work based diploma in horticulture. He successfully applied for the job of area team leader in August 2018 and is responsible for the growing and despatch of crops within his area. Nursery raises money for cancer charities

The Bransford Webbs Plant Company donates plants to St Richards Hospice for them to sell on behalf of the charity. Karen Jenkins, Propagation Supervisor, co-ordinates this with the hospice, and collects and delivers the plants in her own time. Since the beginning of 2017, the charity has raised over £8500 through the sale of these plants. St Richards Hospice is an independent charity that helps people living with life limiting illnesses. They care for 3000 patients, loved ones and the bereaved each year in Worcestershire. In addition to this, The Bransford Webbs Plant Company took part in The Stand Off to Cancer Bake Off at the end of March, raising over £130 from the cake sales. “Fantastic news and a great achievement for a local hospice. Adrian King appointed as new Sales Representative

The Bransford Webbs Plant Company are proud to announce the appointment of Adrian King as their new Sales Representative for the Northern territory, caring for and improving on an existing portfolio of accounts throughout the North of England and Scotland. Adrian, formerly of Wyevale and Blue Diamond, has retail experience as a plant area manager and is looking forward to the challenges this new role will offer him. He will be out meeting customers in his new area over the next few weeks and months. “We are very pleased to have Adrian on board with us”, commented, David Chilvers,who has now officially taken up the role as Sales Manager. “He brings with him an excellent knowledge of retail plants and will be a great addition to the sales team”.

Bransford Webbs is now a zero to landfill business

The Bransford Webbs Plant Company are very proud of their environmental credentials and have achieved the BS8555 accreditation for environmental management for ten consecutive years, having first achieved this important certification back in 2008. Our environmental objectives are reviewed and updated on an annual basis. It remains essential that we proactively choose the most environmental methods of production as possible. Among other targets, we have reduced our peat usage, continue to catch, recycle and reuse all the rainwater which falls on the glasshouses and office / despatch buildings and have a 60KW solar panel system fitted to the main despatch shed roof. Our spray programs are developed to be compatible with the wide range of biological control used on the nursery.
